Weekly Bulletin 2/9/14

Dear Parishioner,

This Lent we will be offering an “Evening with Pope Francis.” The Holy Father is not able to be with us in person, but we will have his words upon which to reflect. Last year the Pope issued an important document which is officially called an Exhortation. Its title in Latin is Evangelii Gaudium and in English it translates “The Joy of the Gospel.” This is the most important document Francis has issued so far in his papacy; In a wonderful way, it crystalizes his view of the church and his ministry within it.

The Exhortation is quite long (288 sections). Although it is very rewarding to read, it would take over 3 hours to do so. Therefore, we have identified three important selections from the Exhortation for our Lenten reflection. You will find them on our parish website. A printable PDF file is also on the website, if you wish to make your own copy.

We will gather on Wednesday, March 12th from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Large Hall.  We ask those participating to read the chosen selections beforehand.  I will lead the discussion.  I will first give a brief overview of selection A of the letter. There will then be time for table discussion based upon the following questions:

Which comments of the Pope did I find noteworthy?  Why?

What resonated with my own lived experience of faith?

The floor will then be open to share the results of the discussion with all present.  This same format will then be repeated for selections B & C.

Because of the power of the Pope’s words, this evening promises to be a rewarding spiritual experience. Please plan to join us on March 12th.

WEBSITE NEWS – Our new parish website is powered by a program called WordPress. We are looking for a parishioner, conversant with WordPress, who would be willing to serve as a consultant to the website. If you have advanced skills in WordPress and would be willing to offer some limited time to make our website more effective, please contact Fr. George at the parish office (440-946-0887).

Those who wish to review homilies by Fr. George on our parish website will be happy to know that recent homilies will not only be available in written form but also as audio files. This will allow you to hear a recent homily on your computer, iPad, or smart phone. You can access recent homilies by visiting our parish website (stnoel.org). We are attempting to have each homily available by the Wednesday following the weekend on which it has been offered.

LATIN AMERICAN COLLECTION – We collected $110.00 for this collection.  Thank you for your generosity.

PEACE & PRIME TIME will not gather this Sunday.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST: The annual Pancake Breakfast to benefit Youth Ministry will be held this Sunday, from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in the Large Hall. The menu will include pancakes, French toast, sausage, hash browns, coffee and juice.  We will be accepting donations at the door and tickets will not be sold ahead of time. The suggested donation amount is $7.00 per person. Walk-ins are welcome. Thank you for your support!

HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT: Our high school retreat “We Are the Body of Christ” will be held February 21st-23rd at Cedar Hills in Painesville. This weekend is open to all high school youth. Registration forms can be found in the kiosk or on the St. Noel website.  The deadline for these to be returned has been extended until February 12th.

CALLING ALL YOUTH IN GRADES 3-12 – If you are interested in ministering as a lector at Children’s Liturgy of the Word, or a young person in grades 3-12 interested in ministering as a lector at Children’s Liturgy of the Word, see or contact Michele ([email protected] or 440-946-1128, ext. 21).

GAME NIGHT – A second parish game nigh has been scheduled for Saturday, March 1st.  Join us in the Banquet Center after the 5:00 Mass.  We will provide pizza and pop. Bring your favorite game and game night treat to share. Sign up on the kiosk if you plan to attend.

NICARAGUA 2014 – In partnership with IPM, St. Noel Church will travel to Nicaragua for 8 days from June 16th – June 23rd, 2014. The cost is $1,300 plus airfare. This is a unique opportunity to experience the people of Nicaragua and learn how people of faith are making a difference. Is this trip right for you?  Call Anthony to talk about it (440-946-1128 ext. 22).

CLEVELAND ECUMENICAL INSTITUTE FOR RELIGIOUS STUDIES – On six Wednesdays from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. beginning February 19th (no class on March 5). Alison Benders, J.D., Ph.D. will present “Religions in America’s Globalized Society.” The fee is $90. For more information, please call Bernadette LaGuardia (216-283-1507). ST. AUGUSTINE DINNER/AUCTION – Mark your calendars, this event will take place this year on October 16, 2014. More details will follow in the coming months.

endowment-tSomething to think about from the St. Noel Endowment Board… If you have included St. Noel in your estate plan or would like to know how, please contact the office and leave a message for the Endowment. One of our trustees will confidentially contact you.  We are making progress toward our goal of “50 Wills for the Future of St. Noel”, but we need to know of YOUR plan.

ST. NOEL FELLOWSHIP – Meetings are held on Thursdays at 12 Noon in the St. Noel Banquet Center Small Hall. Activities are: February 13th, bingo; February 20th, 12:00 Noon, meeting followed by a luncheon of chicken soup, ham & swiss on Italian bread, and miscellaneous desserts. The cost of the luncheon is $6.00 and the deadline for tickets and payment is Monday, February 17th. For tickets, call Theresa Durik (440-585-9088). On February 27th, there will be bingo and the celebration of birthdays, and anniversaries. Receive a free 50/50 raffle ticket when you bring something for the food pantry. Everyone is welcome.

THE TRUST 100 FIVE-STAR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION for high school seniors is available in the pocket on the kiosk.  Applications need to be turned in to DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home by April 1, 2014.

JESUIT RETREAT HOUSE – On Tuesday, February 11th, Dr. Andy Kereky will lead a daytime retreat “Learning to Pray Again – For the First Time.” Daytime retreats begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m. The cost is $25. CATHOLIC CEMETERY WORKSHOP – Cemetery funeral costs have become the third largest expense most families will pay for in their lifetime. FLOCK OF FRIENDSHIP – This group is for singles 40 and over. BENEDICTINE YOUTH SKILLS BASEBALL CAMP – All boys in grades 5 through 8 are invited to attend the Benedictine High School 2014 Youth Skills Baseball Clinic. PANCAKE BREAKFAST – Willoughby Hills will hold their annual all-you-can-eat Pancake Breakfasts on Sundays, March 2nd, March 9th and March 16th from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Willoughby Hills Community Center.  Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at City Hall and the Community Center Office. Ticket prices are Adults ($6 pre-sale, $7 at the door), children ages 6 thru 12 ($3.50), under 5 are free.
