There are two exciting parish events coming up in February. The first is the Parish Potluck and Game Night. It will take place on Saturday, February 1st in the large hall after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Pasta, meatballs, breadsticks, salad, and cold beverages are provided.
For over 20 years we have been offering Children’s Liturgy of the Word at most of our parish weekend liturgies. Children from 6-9 years old are dismissed after the announcements and gather with a catechist to experience a discussion of the readings of the day at an age level appropriate to them The children return at the presentation of the gifts to join the assembly for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Throughout the years many children have benefited from their participation in Children’s Liturgy of the Word. It remains an important part of our Parish Religious Formation.
Allow me today to offer three pieces of information regarding Children’s Liturgy of the Word. First, beginning next week, February 9th, the children will be dismissed after the opening prayer instead of after the announcements. This will allow the children to participate in the gathering rite and depart only for the Liturgy of the Word itself. They will return as usual during the preparation of the gifts. Beginning next weekend, the presider will call the children forward after the opening prayer. They will gather in the space before the altar and then be led out as usual by the catechist.
Second, as valuable as Children’s Liturgy of the Word is, it is also valuable for young children to participate in the Liturgy of the Word with the entire community. In this way they can experience the witness of adults as they listen and respond to God’s Word. Therefore, I suggest that parents occasionally keep their children with them at Mass and pray together with them during the Liturgy of the Word.
Finally, we are always in need of adults to serve as catechists for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. We will prepare you for this ministry and provide you with materials. It is best if we have two catechists working together at each session both for input and for order. You would have to serve only occasionally. If you would be willing to become a catechist, please contact Michele Baetzold (440-946-1128, ext 21 or [email protected]).
We are fortunate to have Children’s Liturgy of the Word as part of our parish life. May God continue to bless us through all of those who participate in it.
