The Second Book of Maccabees (12:43-46) describes the action of Judas, The Ruler of Israel, who ordered that sacrifices on behalf of those who had died be offered in the Temple of Jerusalem. The passage commends his action saying:
“In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought.”
Praying for those who have died has been a part of Catholic practice for centuries. We believe that death does not end our relationship with those who we love. From their place with Christ, they pray for us, and we in turn pray for their comfort and joy.
One way to pray for those who have died is to dedicate a mass in their memory. The name of the deceased is published in the monthly calendar and is mentioned at Mass during the Prayers of the Faithful. Any of the masses offered here at St. Noel are available for such a commemoration. Arrangements can be made by calling the parish office and selecting an available mass during the upcoming year.
In the past, there were limitations on how many masses could be scheduled for a particular intention. As our parish grows older and smaller, those restrictions have been removed. It is now very easy to schedule one or more masses to remember someone who has died or any other intention for which you would wish to pray.
I encourage you to consider whether you would wish to dedicate a mass for your intention. It is a fitting way for us to pray for your needs together.
