Weekly Bulletin 3/30/14

Dear Parishioner,

Each Lent, we provide an opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance in a communal setting. This year it will take place on Wednesday April 2nd, at 7:00 p.m. The Sacrament of Penance is a prayer which expresses our sorrow for the failings of our lives and asks for God’s forgiveness. Since our sins hurt not only ourselves but others and lessen the witness of the Church, it is fitting to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance together with the Church community.

The official Rite of the Catholic Church outlines three possible formats for the Sacrament of Penance.

One, which is seldom used and limited to special situations, allows for absolution without individual confession of sins.

  • The second option calls for individual confession within a communal setting. This option stresses our common sinfulness and how the forgiveness of God heals us as a community. This will be the option we will offer on April 2nd. The official rite is simple. After prayer, reading from the scriptures, and examination of conscience, we will recite together an Act of Contrition and the Lord’s Prayer.   Then those who wish to receive the sacrament will walk forward to one of the confessors present and quietly mention any serious sins and any lesser faults they would choose to present. The priest will then absolve them from their sins. After everyone has confessed, the presider will then give those who  have come forward  a penance to perform. We will conclude with a prayer, a final blessing, and a  closing song.
  • The third option for the Sacraments is to meet in a one-on-one format with the priest. This option is possible year round to any person simply by calling me to arrange a meeting.

I hope you will join us on April 2nd  to acknowledge our imperfections and God’s continuing forgiveness. Even if you are not inclined to receive the Sacrament by coming forward during the communal celebration and confessing your sins to the priest, it is still valuable to participate in this time of prayer as a recognition of the need to grow, and also as a support to those who choose to receive the Sacrament.
