U.S./Ohio Bishops & Gun Control

Posted in: Social Justice

The Ohio Catholic Bishops Conference recently participated in a process searching for common ground on sensible gun control policies.  Governor Kasich released 5 proposals, supported by the Ohio Bishops, on March 1, 2018.  See the full story here.    Read the statement of the Ohio Bishops here.

While the Governor did not advocate for a ban on assault-style rifles like the AR-15, the United States Bishops have urged for a ban on these weapons since the early 1990’s.  After the tragic 2017 shooting at a concert in Las Vegas, the USCCB issued the following statement.

The USCCB continues to urge a total ban on assault weapons, which we supported when the ban passed in 1994 and when Congress failed to renew it in 2004.

The Church acknowledges the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States and, at the same time, recognizes the demands of the Common Good to enact reasonable policies to limit access to such formidable weapons.

The solution to violence is not more violence.
