The Ohio Catholic Conference & the death penalty

The Ohio Catholic Conference reiterated the Church’s position on the death penalty after the July 23, 2017 execution of Ronald Phillips.  This execution ends a 3-year long break in Ohio and is the first of a number of scheduled executions in the state.

In short, the Church believes the death penalty is unnecessary given our current ability to incarcerate individuals who pose a serious threat to society and is an offense against the inherent dignity present in all human beings.  Read more on the Church’s teaching here, including a powerful statement from Sr. Helen Prejean.
