The Church and the Environment

Pope Francis, in his recently released encyclical, On Care for our Common Home (Laudato Si’) has called on all people to seriously look at the dangers facing our planet.  The United States Bishops have a wonderful page on their website where you can link to the Pope’s document as well as other resources.  You can view the page here.

In a Capitol Hill Briefing, linked on the webpage, the Bishops explain that the Pope is speaking as a moral & spiritual guide rather than a politician or scientist:

“On many concrete questions, the Church has no reason to offer a definitive opinion; she knows that honest debate must be encouraged among experts, while respecting divergent views. But we need only take a frank look at the facts to see that our common home is falling into serious disrepair” (61).

The Pope’s message is one of hope and conversion.  God has not abandoned humanity, and we can still work together to rebuild and repair God’s gift of creation.
